Students of Donald Cronkhite

June 10 – August 20, 2023

My goal as a teacher is not to train students to paint like I do, but to provide them with a toolbox of techniques they can use in their own way. I want to expose them to great art and art history in a welcoming, relaxing atmosphere. We are all learning together. I am continually inspired by my students, regardless of skill level. We meet where we are on our artistic journeys and travel together, getting to know each other better through each successive class.

I am so proud of my Introduction to Oil Painting classes. It takes courage to try something new and there is so much to learn when starting oil painting that it can easily be overwhelming. My students have done a wonderful job taking those first baby steps into the world of oils.

My most recent offering is Imitating the Old Masters. This is proving to be a very popular class and one that is fun to teach. Although we are all painting the same subject, the results are as unique as the individual artists and I love seeing each student’s “masterpiece.”

The Advanced Studio class comprises students who are able to work with a great deal of independence. I serve as a guide to these students as they work on their own pieces in their own style.

Solo Exhibition: Cloudscapes the Color of White
Paintings by Donald Cronkhite

Featuring 17 expressive and brilliantly colored cloudscape paintings that capture the ephemeral and atmospheric conditions found in nature, typically just before a storm. Visitors will engage with powerful compositions of expressive colors and dynamic formations, almost hearing the thunder as the clouds seem to bloom on the canvas. So often overlooked, a familiar sight in the background becomes extraordinary when brought to the fore, simultaneously realistic and wildly abstract. Cronkhite is passionate about clouds, and he wants to share their untamed and ever-changing beauty with the world.

Picturing Places and Spaces

January 20th – April 1st, 2022

This exhibition is the culminating project of students enrolled in a UM-Dearborn Art History capstone seminar taught by Professor Susan Erickson

Drawing on the strengths of the permanent collection of the Stamelos Gallery Center made possible through donor contributions through the years, a selection of prints, paintings and glass explores the ways artists have interpreted places and spaces. Artworks range in approach from realistic to fantastic, and abstract to expressive. European, Mexican, and American artists, including many from Michigan, are featured. A generous loan from the University of Michigan Museum of Art allows expansion of the theme to include Chinese and Japanese artists.

The Stamelos Gallery Center is located on the first floor of the Mardigian Library at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. For more information, see below for contact information. Anyone requiring accommodations under the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act should contact (313)593-5087 prior to August 29.

Juror
David Lusk:

David Lusk likes looking at art: in person or online; from a blind submission or during a fancy appointment; at a museum or gallery or art fair or artist’s studio.  Because of that fact & his ability to help people understand that they should live surrounded by art, he has had a successful & fun-filled 33 years dealing art.

Lusk’s eponymous business, David Lusk Gallery, has outposts in Memphis & Nashville, Tennessee — far from the artworld hotspots, but still home-base for artists of fantastic creativity & appreciative clients.  The Gallery represents a diverse group of painters, photographers & sculptors from across the United States, as well as a handful of artist estates.

The Gallery maintains an active schedule of exhibitions at both locations, creating over 24 distinct & carefully curated shows annually, that even in the year of COVID were still well-received.  The Gallery participates in a handful of international art fairs each year & its website, DavidLuskGallery.com, is an award-winning location for looking at art & learning about artists.  The Gallery regularly works with museums both small & large & major private collectors to advance its artists’ careers.  The New York Times, Miami Herald, Time Magazine, Southern Living, The Huffington Post are just a few media outlets that have discussed David Lusk Gallery & its artists.

Grosse Pointe Artists Association

Ominous Skies: a cloud study – Paintings by Donald Cronkhite

September 11 – October 6, 2019

Donald Cronkhite’s passion for clouds has fueled his work for more then 15 years.

Like the Romantics in the 1700s, he sees clouds as a vehicle for expressing emotions and often focuses on capturing that high-drama moment just before the violence of the storm surfaces or as some describe it: all hell breaks loose.

In the spirit of the Realists, he uses photographic detail so that this moment of high tension and expectation immediately resonates with the viewer.

And like the Expressionists, he encourages the viewer to look so closely at the approaching storm clouds that the experience is exaggerated and the large scale of many of his pieces envelop the viewer into the powerful and mystifying clouds on his canvas and perhaps in their everyday lives.

Cronkhite won this solo show as the best of show in the Grosse Pointe Artists Association’s recent Our Rivers, Our Lakes exhibition.

Grosse Pointe Artists Association

Summer Pleasures

August 6 – September 8, 2019

The spirit of the Grosse Pointe Artists Association (GPAA) began in 1927 when a group of artists organized a juried exhibition at a local club. Soon after, the association began offering art classes and by 1942, the American Federation of the Arts listed GPAA in its American Art Annual. The association has had many homes in its 90-year history. Its first home was at The War Memorial, and after years of moving from one commercial space to another, GPAA returned to The War Memorial in May 2016. In a published history of the organization, GPAA founding member John Vogt passionately describes the organization’s efforts to “improve the quality of life in the Pointes by making art an integral force in the community.” Ninety years later, the only change is that GPAA has broaden its scope to include the Pointes and their neighbors.

Purpose /Theme
In his famous book on Walden Pond, essayist and poet Henry David Thoreau described himself as “rich in sunny hours and summer days.” In the spirit of Thoreau, artists are asked to illustrate the riches they find in summer.

ArtPrize 9

ArtPrize is an open, independently organized international art competition which takes place for 19 days each fall in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  More than five hundred thousand dollars in prizes are awarded each year, which include a $200,000 prize awarded entirely by public vote and another $200,000 prize awarded by a jury of art experts.

Any artist working in any medium from anywhere in the world can participate. Art is exhibited throughout downtown Grand Rapids—museums, bars, public parks, restaurants, theaters, hotels, bridges, laundromats, auto body shops, vacant storefronts and office spaces. Artists and venues register for the competition then find each other through an online connections process in late spring. No one at ArtPrize selects a single artist or artwork, directs an artist where to show work or directs a venue what to show. In 2016, 1,453 works created by artists from 40 states and 44 countries were exhibited in 170 venues.

ArtPrize is free and open to the public and now attracts over 500,000 visitors, making it the most attended public art event in the world in 2014 and 2015, according the The Art Newspaper’s annual “Big Ticket List.”

Juror: Jo Powers
Jo Powers grew up in Downriver, Wayne County where her father had his own sign painting business. Watching him work and associating with his materials greatly influenced her art sensibilities. As an undergrad at WSU, she combined art studies with German language studies, which led to a year of study abroad at the University of Freiburg. While there she also attended the State Academy of the Plastic Arts. After completing her BFA at Wayne State University, Ms. Powers entered Syracuse University where she earned her MFA in painting. She returned to the Frankfurt area in Germany where she taught for the University of Maryland’s European Division and worked for an English pantomime theater group painting stage backdrops. Back in Metro Detroit she free-lance illustrated for publications such the Detroit News, the Detroit Free Press, the Dallas Morning News, the L.A. Times, and for the Chicago Tribune. During this time Ms. Powers began exhibiting her paintings at the Detroit Artists’ Market and at the Detroit Focus Gallery. She credits a grant from the Michigan Council for the Arts in 1985 with launching her painting career. Other grants funded her three-year artist-in-residence at Dominican High School, as well as collaborations with Detroit Dance Collective. In the late nineties, Jo Powers began teaching at Macomb Community College, College for Creative Studies, and at Oakland Community College. Ms. Powers has exhibited in Detroit and in Chicago. Her work is in private collections in the U.S., Germany, and Australia.

Soul Searching

October 22, 2020 – January 27, 2021

The work in “Chasing the Light” attempts to capture a fleeting moment in time while evoking an emotional response and challenging the imagination of the viewer.
